Day 26: a bad habit

Am bit too spaced out and idle. But realise have no control over this. It is simply an attribute of people born in Pisces. I know it to be true, have read it somewhere.

One seriously bad habit is crying when am actually angry, not sad. This makes everybody believe am soft, bleeding heart and miserable - when in all likelihood am so mad at them at that moment I could explode.

Another bad habit is my inability to have one glass of wine. If the bottle is open, it's open anyway right...

This could be a long list, but am going to have a lie down instead.

Day 25: my motto

"A free coffee is a free coffee"

Have already told story about hubby and Anna in LA; being offered a free coffee from Subway. We detest Subway, and all junkfood establishment, possible Subway above and beyond any other. Anyway. There was a free coffee promo this particular morning. Looked at each other and were like... you know. A free coffee is a free coffee. Then it turned out to be most disgusting cup of coffee had ever had, and ended up dumping it in a bin.

Most free coffees, though, are awesome.

Day 22: someone I want to swop lives with for a day

Hmm don't know... Am thinking someone filthy rich and super-thin - would then proceed to waste a heap of money and eat chocolate all day.

Mmm. Chocolate.

Day 18: my faith

Getting a bit of tired of this list... but would have to be half way through by now. Time to discuss some serious issues like faith.

In previous years have been the sort of person who did not like taking a stand (publicly, that is - was always judging people silently). Was kind of... in between, neutral, not able to say one way or the other, not bothered - and so on.

These days?

Not so much.

So in those formative years might have made some cop-out statement involving the word agnostic (which did not know meaning of anyway) and continuing on about importance of accepting beliefs of others.

Today?

I believe in the Universe and in the power of thought - in the connectedness of all things and in... freedom to live and let live.

Religion, which is inherently implied when asked about ones faith, does not represent any of those values. Has never, could never - and never will.

The End.

Day 17: my family

It's all about hubby and me. In Byron.

Have got other family of course, miss them all - friends can become family as well. Am not going to list and describe my people here, kind of private..? Must safeguard the privacy of others when blogging about oneself.

(apart, perhaps, from privacy of hubby)

Day 15: 10 deadly sins

Hmm.

These are not in order of importance.

1. Rudeness
(to be assertive is not the same thing, also to tell sleazy guys off in extremely rude manner when pissed does not count)
2. Selfishness
(me, me, me!)
3. Ignorance
(pleading ignorance on serious issues and using ignorance as an excuse rather than simply finding out for oneself)
4. Animal Cruelty
(including supporting corporations that abuse animals, such as factory farms)
5. Physical Abuse
(apparently cannot walk down street in Kings Cross, Sydney, these days for fear of being king-hit!)
6. Racism
(of course)
7. Wastefulness
(resources are finite, should learn to appreciate what have instead of constantly needing to update everything - mind you, just like Smugglosmurf I too would very much like a new phone. But you should see my phone. Is not like am upgrading from i-phone 4 to i-phone 4.5 or whatever the f... it was called - really!?!)
8. Aggressive Selling
(nothing makes me as angry as sales-people unable to take no for an answer - have even had one of the bastards run after me and call ME rude, when HE was the one chasing ME - oooh, was back in 2006 but still makes blood boil)
9. Ill mannered driving
(tailgating and the like)
10. Littering
(partly because it ruins my walk when hubby risks life to climb out on cliffs to collect other peoples water-bottles and other rubbish)

Day 14: favourite superhero

As in, like, Superman..?

Funny thing about me; have always hated cartoons. Any kind: magazine, TV, animated movies and so on. Especially as child. When got a bit older, learned to appreciate cartoons such as "The Lionking" - as for anything else - nah. Too unrealistic, see.

Realise these superhero cartoons have in later years turned into actual non-cartoon movies, still never really watched one - apart from that Batman-movie starring Heath Ledger. Saw that one at the movies. But preferred the bad guy over Batman.

So my answer is..;

It is all about Pippi Longstocking.

Day 13: this makes me feel better

Hmm.

Laptop broke down again.

Strike everything said about what makes me upset; replace with "stupid effing laptops and most other technology."

It is here now. But perhaps time to start looking round for different set-up..?

Anyway, had another tooth pulled out, which was equally pleasant and nice as previous time. Actually was better. Started to freak out for some reason - so got given lovely sedative drugs; which thoroughly enjoyed. Am usually quite clean-living so all this drug-taking is a novel reminder of days gone by. Slept all day that day, then laptop broke down.

So what makes one feel better when depressed, is the question?

1. Chocolate
2. Wine
3. A full season of Desperate Housewives on DVD

Glad that is clarified.

Day 12: this makes me cry

Firstly, forgot a big one on the list yesterday: Men who wear skinny jeans. Actually could fit in today as well. Men who wear skinny jeans make me cry.

Anyway.

Crying, clearly, is different from merely getting upset.

I cry all the time. Sad movies, sad books, whenever other people cry, etcetera.

Two things have made me genuinely cry though, in the last several years.

1. Saying goodbye to family, whether I have been in Sweden or some of them have been here.

2. Soul-destroying, meaningless, time-consuming JOBS. Have had them all... there really is nothing to make me sob like little girl and wish could run home to mummy... Fortunately took decision to never do such "work" again.

Oh, that is so sad. Feel like crying now.

Sister and Mother.

Day 10: my day

Woke up at sunrise, sat on balcony with tea.

Went to catch up with Louise in Pottsville; observed some atrocious driver-behaviour, being Sunday and all.

For example:
- Tail gating
- Weaving
- Pulling out dangerously close to motorcycle (there is reason they are commonly referred to as "organ donors" suppose)
- Road rage (for instance motorcyclist against driver who pulled out dangerously close to him)
- Stopping on shoulder
- Going slow in the right lane
- Tandem driving (i.e making out like you are going to overtake, then simply cruising along next to another car)

Etcetera... cannot believe amount of complaining people around here do about the roads. How the government needs to "fix" our roads, which are catastrophically dangerous, apparently.

Anna's input to the road-debate: Roads would be less dangerous if people did not drive like idiots.

I digress.

Made it to Pottsville, had lovely time catching up and discussing important world-issues.

Now am back home updating blog.

There is only so much can fit into a day!

Day 8: my favourite birthday

May I just start off by saying - have worst memory in world. Barely recall last week, let along birthdays long since past.

Also, in general do not like birthdays. Significance of birthday is getting older, plain and simple.

My first age-specific memory (as in, know have got scattered memories from before this, but not sure of age at those times) is turning 5. Remember mother coming into room saying "how does it feel to be five?". My next age-specific memory is turning 26; pahahaha, that was a damn good night. So good in fact, that would not consider spilling the beans on a non-anonymous blog.
I can give you beginning and end. Then you may fill in the blanks.

Beginning: Dressed in all black metal-gear featuring lots of skulls.
- Blank -
End: Jumping into cab, alone, on Oxford Street, Sydney, shouting "let's get the hell out of here, quick!" at approximately 6 am.

Turning 30 was OK as well. Had contracted an eye-infection, but was 30th birthday so had to go out. Hate wearing glasses in public (as are very strong and make me look ridiculous, even more so when suffering eye-infection). Thought best course of action for the night might be to draw attention away from face entirely - so wore something extremely low cut and revealing (which is something normally never do).
Was weird experience wearing glasses in public without anybody teasing me - also had quite a few drinks to get over myself. Cannot walk properly when wearing glasses even sober - so was a funny evening all in all.

Actually my favourite birthday is going to be turning 40. This has been decided for years. Am having massive party. Yes.

Watch out.

Day 7: something I regret

Oooooh, deep. Potentially depressing topic. Of course one must always say "I don't regret anything, all my experiences have made me who I am today!" with chipper smile on face and raised brows.

This, of course, is nothing but lies.

Clearly everyone regrets heaps of things.

Me - on all levels - for instance regret having that bag of chips last night, it was uncalled for and unnecessary. I regret lots of things that I just need to meditate on not regretting.

Regrets:
- Not learning earlier to appreciate small things in life
- Not appreciating how easy school was and making mistake of thinking work might be better (it is not, kids)
- Not being nicer as teen (contributing factor to not having own kids - as kids eventually turn into teens)
- Not being nicer to my mother

Lessons learned from making list of Regrets:
- Appreciate what have
- Be nice to mother

Day 6: my blog-name

Not much to tell really: started blog a very long time ago in dark ages pre-facebook and smartphones. Tried a few names which were taken, and eventually landed on life-of-anna. Alas, do not consider that to be true name of blog - name of blog is really "Anna in Australia," and can change at any time depending on mood. And location. In deed, would be idiotic to move to the Maldives and not change name of blog to "Anna in the Maldives."

Mmm. Like sound of that. "Anna in the Maldives." Nice to daydream now that we are in winter here; and only time of day when am not freezing is when in shower. You see, may be 20 degrees and sunny during the day - but as soon as sun sets (around 5pm) it is perhaps 10 degrees. Inside and out. Yes. Insulation - what..?

That is whole other issue.

The famous Aussie laid-back attitude extends to house-building. Floor not straight? No worries, mate! Supporting beam missing? She'll be right, mate! Single pane windows and no insulation? It's all good, bro!

And most of the time they're right, too.

We may get a little cold at times, for a couple of months out of the year - but it's all good really. And this also teaches one the important spiritual lesson of detachment and patience. Not feeling short-tempered in the face of cold hands and feet. Shrugging ones shoulders at minor issues and realising - there is more to life than a perfect appearing house.

Actually am going to stop here. Was going to write some more, but fingers are ice-cold and stiff, keep having to correct spelling mistakes due to not being able to use hands as God intended.

But I'm totally cool with that.

Totally.

Nicknames I have had and Why

Not all that many, "Anna" is pretty easy to say.

1. Cilla - when little - totally nonsensical; believe after the neighbours dog.
2. Sickan - after movie character. Do not feel like explaining further. But Swedish people will be familiar with Charles-Ingvar Jönsson...
3. Banana. People using this nickname did so because they knew how much I hated it and it made me angry. This, to some people, was considered funny.
4. Baby. Hubby and I call each other "baby." I know, awwwwww.

Charles-Ingvar Jönsson

Stolen List

Going to steal a list from a friend...

You see, the thing is - cannot think of much to write about at the moment (apart, of course, from intriguing tales about my cooking and baking) and know importance of keeping up writing until such time I work out what my novel is going to be about.

I write in English, that is just what I do... Believe it or not, writing in Swedish takes me a lot longer, and keep having to google words. Yes. So have taken the liberty of translating list into English.

Day 1: introduce myself
Day 2: in my handbag
Day 3: nicknames I have and why
Day 4: my house
Day 5: this would have been nice to eat today
Day 6: my blog-name
Day 7: something I regret
Day 8: my favourite birthday
Day 9: my favourite time of year
Day 10: my day
Day 11: this upsets me
Day 12: this makes me cry
Day 13: this makes me feel better
Day 14: favourite superhero
Day 15: 10 deadly sins
Day 16: my bathroom cupboard
Day 17: my family
Day 18: my faith
Day 19: a first
Day 20: something I miss
Day 21: my fears
Day 22: someone I want to swop lives with for a day
Day 23: my favourite book
Day 24: a moment
Day 25: my motto
Day 26: a bad habit
Day 27: my gumboots
Day 28: something I can't live without
Day 29: En bild från en tid jag saknar
Day 30: my dreams

Day 1: introduce myself
Born in 1980 near Stockholm, Sweden.
Moved a lot - which has remained, kind of, my thing. As such, do not have the same closeness to a location that I feel most people have. Home is not somewhere in particular, home is where I am.
Have always been stubborn and difficult. Am still stubborn and difficult, but a hell of a lot nicer.
Used to be fiercely independent - now am slightly more dependent and rely on hubby for things which would never admit to more devoted feminist-values-oriented friends (that is to say, most Swedish friends). Though this, I feel, is an arrangement which works for us. Why would I pay bills when cannot even work out the sum total of 74-16 without a calculator or tell you the price of a litre of milk (do not drink milk, but that is beside the point)? Why would hubby bake chocolate muffins or scrub shower when, indeed, I would have to do it again anyway..?
But fear not. Am also quite lazy, so would never dream of ironing, sewing or mopping floors (unless Christmas).
Have lived in Madrid, Paris, Orlando (Florida), Stockholm, London, Amsterdam, Sydney and finally - Byron Bay. Living in all these places has finally taught me to appreciate all those things typically Swedish that I spent my teenage years trying to escape from. For the first time in ten years, have got Swedish people around me on a daily basis. Like Swedish Neighbour; together we have bizarre Swenglish conversations nobody could follow except us - even her three year old son tends to stick to English when we get started.
At the moment, life is pretty good.

More Enlightenment

As part of becoming more enlightened, zen-like and angelic; one must learn to recognise instances when one is feeling annoyed and angry for whatever reason - and let go of all negative emotions involved.

You see, we are only hurting ourselves by being angry. If you are angry, say, at another person - who is really suffering? You or them? That is right - you (unless of course you are the physically violent type).

Things on which I practise this:

- People using grass-trimmers and other power-tools
- The Laptop
- The vacuum cleaner
- Range of things hubby does (like starting to drive first, then putting seatbelt on... who does that?)
- Things that do not do what they were designed to do, hence serve no purpose
- Things that really serve no purpose, like ornaments
- Stupid people who are under the impression that they are cool

As you can see, most days are filled with opportunities to become more enlightened.

Yay.

Update

Bangalow Farmers Markets today - a much smaller version of Byron. But will check it out, and also grab LSD in town.

Would love to get some photos, alas camera battery has died.
And no, do not have iphone. Would like one... very much. This is new. Am always last person in world to have anything new from technological sphere. Was last to catch on to CDs. To mobile phones. To CD walkmans. To digital cameras (only got mine a year or so ago). And anything else you can imagine. So have only just started to notice the iphone.

Actually, probably would not get the iphone, as such. Would get a similar thing from other brand.

One day... one day.

On the Topic of Emailing

New and somewhat concerning trend within marriage: emailing.
Admittedly, emailing has been going on for some time. Recently, however, the incidences of emailing seem to be on the rise. For instance, today.

Me: Do you think we should go and rent a DVD for tonight?
Hubby: (disgruntled) I take it you did not read my email..?
Me: Email? No, of course not. We have been sitting at the same table all afternoon! I suppose I thought you might speak to me?!
Hubby: Nah. Emailing is easier.
Me: (sarcastically) Right-o... So what did your email say?
Hubby: Ehm... something about something tonight..?
Me: I suppose you will just have to check your sent items..?

The possibility of conflict exists when wife feels the problem is "emailing is an inappropriate tool to use for day-to-day communication within marriage", and hubby feels the problem is "you don't bloody well check your emails".

It's true!

I almost never read an email. (Post Secret Style Confession!!)

I will open an email from the following people:
- Mother
- Sister
- Sister-in-law
- Girlfriends N and N, who almost never email me

That about sums it up. Email to me is what regular mail is for most people. That is to say, something to be left in pile on kitchen bench for months before eventually shoved into bin and thrown out. Only, with email, one can bypass the storing on bench and the actual throwing out.

One of hubby's pet hates is my habit of never actually deleting any of the emails I do not read. I, serenely and in zen-like fashion, leave them to linger in Inbox (and Junk Mail Folder). Like, who cares?
Right. HUBBY cares. A lot.

I never let him look at my Inbox anymore. Is source of great stress for everyone involved when I do.

Since am on the topic - actually had this system of communication going on at previous workplace. Nobody ever actually had to speak to anybody else. This was extra weird, seeing as all sitting in open-plan office-scape with approximately zero personal space.

But hey, why change a working concept?

Am going to finish this entry and email hubby to see what plans are for tomorrow.

In Case of Rain - and Difficulty in Getting to Know People

Bit of a slow afternoon... Have finished getting house sorted for arrival of guests. Only, not sure if guests arriving any moment, tonight - or indeed - tomorrow. So don't want to start some project and create a mess, now that have just finished cleaning. You know.

Also started doing some sweeping of driveway, weeding etcetera - but gave up as started to rain. If this is "mostly sunny" (forecast for today) - then am not looking forward to "showers" (forecast for week). Hmm. What to do with guests in case of rain?

Should make a list. Things to do in and around Byron, in case of rain.
1. Ehm... drink?
2. Nothing else comes to mind.

Anyway, will be good to have some people round. Some interaction, with others. When this is lacking, one can easily become socially awkward. Like shift-workers.

Suspect am not all that popular in street. You see, neighbours had party the other night, to which suspect entire world was invited. Except us. Cannot imagine why!

Unless... there was the time Angry Anna asked local children to get the (...) off driveway. And sort of kept to selves for a while when first moved in (on purpose). But a few weeks ago made the effort to go over and say hello, chat for a bit, as you do. Or should I say - as other people do. When I do it, it comes off weird.

Am not at all mad that was not invited - that is not what am saying! They don't know us from a bar of soap. Am merely wondering - how DO people get to know each other??? Becasue I can't seem to get to know anybody.

Apart from Louise. Good old Louise!
